There's often discussion about whether circumcision is necessary, either for health or cosmetic reasons. Although medical opinion suggests that it's not necessary generally, it seems that mothers prefer it for their sons even so. Surveys indicate that they feel that the circumcised penis is better to look at, and they feel that their sons will be favoured in this way by ladies in the future!
I'm in favour of it, at least for myself, but I agree with those who think that the man should choose for himself. I'd have gone further with this however, if I'd not been presented with a fait accompli from the age of a few days. Why not let one's partner decide? If she wanted it, then fine, for myself, I'd happily agree to that. I'd see it as a token of my affection for her, and something that I could give to only one lady. Of course, it would have to be done by proper supervision, but I'd like her to be there with me as well. Some cultures make it a special event, and I'd go with that, so that if she wanted her friends along as well, it would be no problem as far as I'm concerned; in fact, I'd welcome it. Again, I'd feel I was giving her something very special, almost like a male equivalent of virginity. If there was some way she could actually participate in the procedure, then that would certainly help to allay fears I might have, as well as to be something to share between us.
The timing of the event raises a number of possibilities; something like the first anniversary of being together and making love, or a specific birthday of the man's, might be appropriate. In some societies the man's status is influenced by his ability to endure hardship. Obviously, witnesses would have to verify the true facts in such cases.
This is now a hypothetical question, but I've known several girls who, if they'd asked me to be circumcised for them, I would have been pleased to accept. Well, it may seem a crazy suggestion, but it's an alternative to some of the ideas I've seen on the subject as it would give everyone the opportunity to decide for themselves instead of following traditions, either medical or religious. And it might bring some equality between the sexes. If the boy knows that when he asks a girl to make love for the first time, she could politely request that he's circumcised in return, it could level things out somewhat. He'd surely not refuse, especially if he knew that her lady friends would find out and assume he was a wimp!
Just to end; I've come across so many men, sometimes at our first meeting, who've proudly told me about having a vasectomy as if it's a macho thing to do. Perhaps there's a trace of primitive man, wanting to boast of prowess, even in the most educated and civilised person, for whom the outlets of mammoth hunting and battle are no longer available.
